U.S.%20%234444iAbstract%20Expressionists%0AIssue%20Date%3A%20March%2011%2C%202010City%3A%20Buffalo%2C%20NYPrinting%20Method%3A%20LithographedPerforations%3A%20Serpentine%20Die%20Cut%0A%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0A%0ABirth%20of%20Adolph%20Gottlieb%0A%0A%0A%0A%0A%0AUS%20%234444i%26nbsp%3Bpictures%20Gottlieb%26rsquo%3Bs%201949%26nbsp%3BRomanesque%20Fa%26Atilde%3B%26sect%3Bade.%0A%0AAmerican%20artist%20Adolph%20Gottlieb%20was%20born%20on%20March%2014%2C%201903%2C%20in%20New%20York%20City%2C%20New%20York.%26nbsp%3B%20Gottlieb%26rsquo%3Bs%20art%20was%20displayed%20in%20more%20than%20250%20exhibitions%20during%20his%20lifetime%2C%20and%20he%26rsquo%3Bs%20considered%20to%20be%20one%20of%20the%20first%20American%20artists%20to%20embrace%20the%20Abstract%20Expressionist%20movement.%0AGottlieb%20realized%20his%20love%20for%20art%20while%20he%20was%20in%20high%20school%20and%20attended%20the%20Art%20Students%20League%20of%20New%20York.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20then%20found%20work%20on%20a%20merchant%20ship%20that%20would%20take%20him%20to%20Europe%20to%20study%20art%20there.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20spent%20over%20a%20year%20exploring%20France%2C%20Germany%2C%20Austria%2C%20and%20Czechoslovakia%2C%20visiting%20museums%20in%20every%20city%20he%20went%20to.%26nbsp%3B%20By%20the%20time%20he%20returned%20to%20New%20York%2C%20he%20was%20one%20of%20the%20most%20widely%20traveled%20artists%20in%20the%20city%20at%20the%20time.%26nbsp%3B%20Gottlieb%20went%20on%20to%20continue%20his%20studies%20at%20the%20Art%20Students%20League%2C%20Parsons%20School%20of%20Design%2C%20Cooper%20Union%2C%20and%20the%20Educational%20Alliance.%0AGottlieb%20held%20his%20first%20solo%20exhibition%20at%20New%20York%26rsquo%3Bs%20Dudensing%20Galleries%20in%201930.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201935%20he%20joined%20with%20a%20group%20of%20other%20artists%20known%20as%20%26ldquo%3BThe%20Ten.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20The%20group%20worked%20together%20to%20promote%20and%20sell%20their%20work%20during%20the%20tough%20economic%20times%20of%20the%20Great%20Depression.%0A%0AUS%20%234627%26nbsp%3B%26ndash%3B%20Gottlieb%26rsquo%3Bs%20time%20painting%20the%20Arizona%20desert%20inspired%20a%20drastic%20change%20in%20his%20art.%0A%0AAfter%20a%20brief%20period%20of%20teaching%2C%20Gottlieb%20spent%20nine%20months%20painting%20in%20the%20Arizona%20desert%2C%20which%20brought%20about%20a%20major%20change%20in%20his%20work.%26nbsp%3B%20While%20he%20had%20previously%20painted%20in%20an%20expressionist-realist%20style%2C%20he%20began%20to%20explore%20surrealism%20and%20formalist%20abstraction.%26nbsp%3B%20By%20the%20time%20he%20returned%20to%20New%20York%2C%20many%20of%20his%20artist%20friends%20criticized%20his%20work%20for%20being%20too%20abstract.%26nbsp%3B%20Gottlieb%20then%20befriended%20with%20European%20Surrealists%20who%20confirmed%20his%20belief%20that%20the%20subconscious%20was%20the%20source%20for%20universal%20art.%0A%0AUS%20%233186h%26nbsp%3B%26ndash%3B%20Celebrate%20the%20Century%20stamp%20honoring%20Abstract%20Expressionism%20of%20the%201940s.%0A%0AIn%20the%201940s%2C%20Gottlieb%20began%20creating%20what%20he%20called%20%26ldquo%3BPictographs.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20a%20new%20form%20of%20abstraction%20that%20was%20based%20entirely%20on%20his%20subconscious%2C%20rather%20than%20adhering%20to%20a%20determined%20narrative.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20also%20explored%20Surrealist%20bimorphism%20and%20automatism%2C%20creating%20organic%20shapes%20spontaneously%20from%20his%20subconscious.%26nbsp%3B%20His%20style%20of%20painting%20allowed%20people%20to%20interpret%20his%20paintings%20in%20their%20own%20way.%0A%0AUS%20%233910a%26nbsp%3B%26ndash%3B%20Gottlieb%20is%20the%20only%20artist%20whose%20work%20was%20part%20of%20a%20collaborative%20retrospective%20between%20the%20Guggenheim%20and%20the%20Whitney%20Museum.%0A%0AIn%20the%201950s%2C%20Gottlieb%20began%20to%20reject%20the%20%26ldquo%3Ball-over%20painting%26rdquo%3B%20found%20in%20American%20abstract%20painting.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20began%20creating%20large%20Imaginary%20Landscapes%2C%20with%20very%20active%20lower%20panels%20and%20more%20passive%20upper%20panels%2C%20establishing%20a%20different%20style%20of%20abstraction.%26nbsp%3B%20Concerning%20his%20work%2C%20Gottlieb%20said%2C%20%26ldquo%3BI%20frequently%20hear%20the%20question%2C%20%26rdquo%3B%26tilde%3BWhat%20do%20these%20images%20mean%3F%26rsquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20This%20is%20simply%20the%20wrong%20question.%26nbsp%3B%20Visual%20images%20do%20not%20have%20to%20conform%20to%20either%20verbal%20thinking%20or%20optical%20facts.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20better%20question%20would%20be%20%26rdquo%3B%26tilde%3BDo%20these%20images%20convey%20any%20emotional%20truth%3F%26rsquo%3B%26rdquo%3B%0AIn%20the%201960s%20and%2070s%20Gottlieb%20embarked%20his%20Burst%20series.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20works%20had%20simplified%20disc%20shapes%20and%20winding%20masses.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20work%20is%20often%20considered%20some%20of%20the%20early%20color%20field%20style%2C%20a%20forerunner%20of%20Lyrical%20Abstraction.%26nbsp%3B%20In%20the%201960s%2C%20Gottlieb%20also%20experimented%20with%20sculpture%2C%20producing%2042%20sculptures%2C%20including%20three%20large%20outdoor%20pieces.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201963%20he%20was%20the%20first%20American%20artist%20to%20earn%20Brazil%26rsquo%3Bs%20Gran%20Premio%20of%20the%20S%26Atilde%3B%26pound%3Bo%20Paulo%20Bienale.%26nbsp%3B%20Additionally%2C%20in%201968%20the%20Guggenheim%20and%20Whitney%20Museums%20in%20New%20York%20held%20a%20retrospective%20exhibition%20of%20his%20art.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20was%20the%20only%20collaboration%20between%20these%20two%20museums%20to%20date.%0A%0AUS%20%234444i%26nbsp%3B%26ndash%3B%20Fleetwood%20First%20Day%20Cover%0A%0AGottlieb%20suffered%20a%20stroke%20in%201970%20that%20left%20him%20mostly%20paralyzed%20except%20for%20his%20right%20arm%20and%20hand.%26nbsp%3B%20He%20continued%20to%20paint%20until%20his%20death%20on%20March%204%2C%201974.%26nbsp%3B%20After%20his%20death%2C%20the%20Adolph%20and%20Esther%20Gottlieb%20Foundation%20was%20established%20according%20to%20his%20wishes%20to%20provide%20grants%20to%20artists.%0AVisit%20the%20foundation%26rsquo%3Bs%20website%26nbsp%3Bfor%20more%20on%20Gottlieb%20and%20to%20view%20some%20of%20his%20artwork.
