Red-Eared%20Slider%20Turtle%20Shell%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20Science%0D%0AThe%20Red-Eared%20Slider%20is%20a%20semi-aquatic%20pond%20slider%20native%20to%20the%20southern%20United%20States.%20It%20gets%20the%20%26ldquo%3BRed-Eared%26rdquo%3B%20part%20of%20its%20name%20from%20the%20distinctive%20red%20stripe%20around%20its%20ears%2C%20and%20the%20%26ldquo%3BSlider%26rdquo%3B%20part%20from%20its%20ability%20to%20slide%20quickly%20off%20rocks%20into%20the%20water%20to%20avoid%20predators.%20The%20Red-Eared%20Slider%20is%20deceptively%20fast%20and%20an%20excellent%20swimmer%2C%20spending%20most%20of%20its%20time%20in%20the%20water%20except%20when%20it%20lies%20on%20rocks%20to%20bask%20in%20the%20sun.%20It%20grows%20up%20to%20about%2010%20inches%20long%20and%20has%20a%20dark%20green%20shell%20with%20variable%20markings.%0D%0AThe%20Story%0D%0AAn%20omnivore%2C%20it%20feeds%20on%20a%20variety%20of%20aquatic%20plants%20as%20well%20as%20insects%2C%20worms%2C%20small%20crustaceans%20and%20fish.%20Slider%20turtles%20are%20also%20quite%20widely%20kept%20as%20pets.
